Gingivitis može naškoditi zubima, ali i korenu i nervima svakog zuba. Povlačenje desni može dovesti do toga da zubni koren postane vidljiv, pa čak dovesti i do ispadanja zuba. Dok nedovoljno često pranje zuba može dovesti do zapaljenja desni – i previše često ili prejako pranje zuba može dovesti do istog oboljenja. Ako se gingivitis ne tretira na pravi način može dovesti do mnogo ozbiljnijeg problema nego što je samo zadah iz usta. Gingivitis će prodreti do korena zuba i zaraziti, ne samo nekoliko zuba – nego sve zube u ustima. Takođe će uzrokovati da Vaše desni postanu preosetljive i da krvare prilikom pranja zuba.

Faktori koji povećavaju rizik od razvijanja gingivitisa:
Pušenje ili žvakanje duvana
Sistemske bolesti poput dijabetesa
Neke vrste lekova kao što su steroidi, neke vrste lekova protiv epilepsije, terapija kancera i drugi
Mostovi koji više ne naležu kako treba
Oštećene plombe
Trudnoća ili upotreba oralnih kontraceptiva
